Lesson 47-48 Thimbles - Needles and Razor Blades
Manipulation is the pinnacle of magic. There's probably no beginner who hasn't tried special tricks for balls, playing cards, coins, or cigarettes. And there's certainly no professional magician who hasn't included a manipulation routine in one of their routines. Any object that fits comfortably in one hand and can also be concealed there can be manipulated, especially everyday objects like thimbles.
Harlan Tarbell uses a routine involving 16 thimbles to explain all the essential moves and offers numerous tips on how to make such a performance astonishing and entertaining. This is followed by "The Miser's Dream - with Thimbles" and a few additional vanishing techniques.
For readers of the German-language edition, there's a 20-page excursus explaining that eight years after Harlan Tarbell's death, Werry introduced special thimbles that revolutionized thimble work. All the important Werry thimble grips are explained. The routines in which they are used will leave your audience rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
In keeping with thimbles, Lesson 48 then moves on to needles, but instead of manipulating them, they are swallowed by the performer for the sensational trick 'The Needle Mystery'. The same thing happens with razor blades, which, like needles, emerge from the magician's mouth strung on a thread.
