5 Routines on the topic of dates – Force - blind magic square
Magic "(Blind) Quick Square"
I've put "blind" in parentheses because you have to fill in the block grid yourself because of the auxiliary codes. The technique, however, is the same as for the "real blind magic square": You ask for a number and enter it in the "lucky number" box below the grid. Then you construct a magic square that repeatedly results in this number as a partial sum. You don't follow your own pattern; instead, you always fill in the box requested by the audience. All you need to do is be able to do extremely simple "elementary school arithmetic" (plus/minus). This variant is unbeatable in terms of simplicity and is particularly suitable if you want to excel at speed. I used it myself for my Guinness Book of Records (2002).
Magic "(blind) square"
The same principle, but an additional calculation (division by 4) prevents the large differences in the size of the entered numbers that are possible in the first version.
Magic "Force Square"
Something for advanced players: The audience can freely name three numbers and even choose the boxes where they should be entered. They fill in the remaining boxes to create a magic square. That's quite an achievement. But the kicker is that the sum of this magic square is forced. It could be a page from a book, the opening code for a combination lock, or whatever...
Dürer and more
With this block and this routine, you'll be able to add any given date (in the middle boxes of the bottom two rows, the day/month and – spread across two boxes – the year below) to a magic square and, if you know the date, immediately state the resulting sum of the squares. If I now assure you that you don't need to do any calculations for this construction (unless you consider adding and subtracting 1 or 2 a calculation), you'll probably find it hard to believe, but it's true! Combined with the pseudo-psychometry block "In the Name of Love," this routine can be enhanced even further.
In the name of the date
This version is certainly one of the most powerful presentations of the magic square. Here, you fill in only 12 boxes and then let the spectator enter their date, which you seemingly couldn't have known. Their date completes your numbers to form a magic square.
