I published the first effects of this "principle" in 2015 in the Daedalus series, but I completely reworked and significantly expanded them for this book, as there's quite a bit more to it now. The final inspiration came from writing the new Lesley book, which is still in print at the time of this foreword.
Yes, I know. Almost all of these effects can be performed without the back numbering if you have a memorized deck of cards in the back of your mind, and I'll happily admit that such a memorized deck is an even better weapon and superior to the preparation used in this book. And once you've memorized a deck, simply put the sheet with the rubbing letters aside—perhaps you'll need it for a tarot or fortune-telling game after all—and start working on the effects right away.
But for all those who don't have the confidence to memorize, are afraid of the effort, or simply don't appear often enough to anchor such a system securely and permanently in their heads, there's a tricky solution here that makes small miracles possible.
