Lesson 43
Tricks with Cloths 5 - Dye Cloths
Silk scarves play an important role in magic—just like ropes, for example. Over time, an almost unfathomable number of tricks have been created using these colorful textiles. There's a reason for this: silk scarves have a very visual effect, are easy to handle, and can be compressed very small, but can also appear very voluminous and take up a relatively large space. Magic performed with silk scarves has a sophisticated and classy feel.
This lesson is dedicated to dyeing shawls. You'll learn about trick shawls that change color when you run your hand over them, as well as ingenious tools that enable this effect with unprepared shawls. The so-called "dye tube" or "cloth dyeing tube" is discussed in detail and in its many different variations. There are also routines involving color changes on unprepared shawls and without any secret tools—handy techniques that can be performed almost impromptu.
Harlan Tarbell has compiled twelve routines on the subject of cloth dyeing, in which he describes tricks from his own practice and the repertoire of such famous magicians as Ade Duval, Horace Goldin and Milbourne Christopher.
