This bibliography includes writings on the art of sleight of hand published before the end of the Second World War and thus particularly relevant for collectors and historians of magic. Personal autopsies of the vast majority of the bibliographed works made it possible to compile a detailed bibliography that goes far beyond previously available bibliographies on this topic and attempts to meet scholarly standards. A total of over 3,000 independently published publications (including various editions and variants of individual editions) as well as around 20 journals are recorded in detail. In addition to a precise title description, each entry includes information on the format, collation, and—where available—a description of the binding. In many cases, comments and explanations are appended that describe the content of the work in more detail or provide additional information about the author or the historical context of the respective work. Publications that could not be autopsied are generally documented by source citations or provided with a reference to a location in public libraries.
