You borrow a ring and place it in a small envelope. You can tell a story about the fascination with jewelry in general, and rings in particular, and also about how other cultures placed just as much value on certain everyday items as on jewelry. You seal the envelope and hand it to a spectator.
"Ancient China placed great value on the extraordinary and wonderful variety of its tea. And even today, tea, like a precious metal, is treated and traded with reverence throughout the world." As you say these words, you point, without touching, to a magnificent little tea box. Its slightly slanted sides, made of exotic wood, reflect the hours an old-school artist spent crafting and polishing it to a high shine. From the box hangs a thread bearing a familiar tea bag label.
"Decide which precious possession seems more important to you. Some people believe that tea and gold are practically interchangeable." After these words and a snap of your fingers, ask the spectator to open their envelope.
It contains nothing but fragrant tea leaves. Point to the tea box again and—with an absolutely empty hand—pick it up and shake it. You'll hear an ominous rattle. Now open the lid and show that the box is filled with tea bags. Grab the dangling label and pull out the tea bag attached to it.
The spectator's ring is in this tea bag! Tear open the bag and return the ring to the spectator.
