The Almanac 2020
Essays - Basics - Tricks

How was 2020?
This has certainly been a particularly memorable year for magicians. Within just a few months, a deadly virus has swept the entire world. In order to contain it, the economy, culture, schools and kindergartens, and social and personal life have been paralyzed time and again, sometimes temporarily, sometimes with an open-ended shutdown. And even today, with new variants of the virus emerging despite initial vaccinations, there is still no end in sight.
For magicians, this means that almost overnight, as for other cultural workers, their performance opportunities have disappeared almost 100%.

In the "Almanac 2020", Ulrich Rausch shows what the year was like from the perspective of child magicians: In 15 essays, one can not only understand these 12 special months, but the sometimes very personal statements also reflect current questions: For example, whether the obligation of confidentiality for magicians still makes any sense today, what a good magic set for children looks like, one learns another good reason why filming should not be allowed during performances, how to treat audience assistants more or less respectfully, and what one should definitely consider when putting together a program.

In addition, there are five descriptions of the tricks, all of which are easy to implement thanks to over 60 illustrations, but are no less effective:

Audible
A coin is placed in the hand of a child, and the child can decide when the effect occurs, which is not only visible but also audible.

Coin to cloth
A large coin is placed in the empty hand and transforms into a silk scarf. An ideal transition between scarf and coin tricks.

Animal forecast
An animal is sketched on a piece of paper—still face down. A child is free to choose an animal from a deck of animal cards. Even if the drawing doesn't closely resemble the chosen animal, which leads to a humorous dialogue with the children, it is ultimately proven that it is exactly the chosen animal.

Candy chain
Candies are plucked from the air, appear at the fingertips, and are then mysteriously joined together to form a chain. An ideal trick for giving a child a magical gift.

And finally, a book review that can also be done online.

This makes the almanac not only a historical document but also a small workbook for all practitioners.
