He is at the scene not in his capacity as a magician - an appearance in a variety show would be a step too far for him - but as a private detective.
Unfortunately, even that's a step too far for him, because Ben has absolutely no idea what a private investigator's job is. And there was certainly no mention of murder! But it's too late to back out now, because Ben himself is on the list of suspects...
