Conversation with the Magic King
In 1979, Günter Bernhard Achim Klepke (1930-2020) and his wife Helene took over the traditional "Zauberkönig" shop on Hermannstrasse in Berlin-Neukölln. They ran it until 1995.
Uncrowned by another hand and yet unchallenged, Günter Klepke was the magician king, not only of Berlin. The author has known him and his wife since 1979, meeting them in the shop, at the theater for their annual magic shows, and much later, in retirement, at the Klepke couple's home. Here, the two recounted how Klepke became magician king and magician, and what it means to successfully run a magic shop.
Stefan Alexander Rautenberg recorded these conversations and compiled them into a book in 2021. The result is over 100 pages, supplemented by numerous photos, in which the Magic King recounts, in his typical Klepke-esque Berlin accent, his stories about the old shop on Friedrichstrasse, the Magic Queen, his performances, his repertoire, and countless surprising encounters over 90 years.
Wittus Witt designed the book, supplemented it with photos from his archive, and published it in January 2022 by Magische Welt.
